What Is a Phalaenopsis Orchid?
The Phalaenopsis Orchid, or Moth Orchid, is a tropical flowering plant native to Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. Named for its moth-shaped blooms, it’s celebrated worldwide for easy care, stunning colours, and months-long flowering. In New Zealand, these orchids are the top choice for indoor flowers — thriving in our homes and making ideal gifts for any occasion.

- Colours from pure white to pink, purple, patterned, and even fragrant varieties
- Low-maintenance — perfect for beginners
- Non-toxic to cats and dogs — safe for family homes
- Perfect gift plant all year round
The NZ Care Guide
Light
Phalaenopsis Orchids thrive in bright, indirect light. North- or east-facing NZ windows are perfect. Avoid direct summer sun — it can burn their leaves under our strong UV.
Temperature & Humidity
Comfortable in typical New Zealand homes (18–26 °C). To encourage flowering, allow nights in autumn to be about 5 °C cooler than days. Humidity of 50–70% is best — boost with misting or a pebble tray if your home is dry.
Watering
Water thoroughly about once a week in summer, less in winter (10–14 days). Let the orchid mix dry slightly before rewatering. Always water in the morning to prevent rot.
Potting & Medium
Use an airy orchid bark mix, readily available at NZ garden centres. Repot every 2–3 years to refresh the medium. Clear pots help monitor healthy green roots.
Feeding
Feed with NZ-available orchid fertilisers (like GT Orchid Focus or Yates Orchid Food) at ¼ strength every 3–4 waterings. Switch to a bloom formula in autumn to promote flowering.
After Bloom Care & Reblooming
Once flowering finishes, you can:
- Cut the spike just above the second node to try for a side spike and more blooms
- Or cut the spike at the base to encourage fresh, new growth
Cool autumn nights help trigger reflowering naturally.
Common Issues in NZ
- Root rot: Avoid overwatering. Healthy roots are firm and green/silver when dry.
- Sunburn: Yellow or scorched leaves mean too much direct sun.
- Underwatering: Wrinkled or leathery leaves indicate it’s too dry.
- Pests: Aphids or mites? Wipe with damp cloth or use a gentle neem oil spray.
