How to Keep Winter Flowers Fresh: Tips from an Auckland Florist

by Tessa Judd

Winter in Auckland is a beautiful time for flowers, cooler temperatures actually help blooms last longer, but there are still a few things that can cut their life short. After 15+ years working with seasonal flowers from local New Zealand growers, I've picked up a few tricks worth sharing.

Whether you've just received a bouquet, ordered a gift box for someone special, or you're treating yourself (always a good idea), here's how to get the most out of your winter blooms.

1. Trim the Stems - Every Time

This one makes the biggest difference. Cut at least 1–2cm off the stems at a 45° angle before placing flowers in water. Do this every couple of days when you change the water. The angled cut increases the surface area for water uptake and stops the stem sitting flat against the bottom of the vase.

Use sharp scissors or a clean knife, blunt tools crush the stem cells and reduce water absorption.

2. Keep Them Away from the Heat Pump

Auckland winters are mild, but we love our heat pumps. The warm, dry air they circulate is one of the fastest ways to dehydrate your flowers. Keep your vase away from direct heat sources, sunny windowsills, and draughts.

The ideal spot? A cool room with indirect light, a hallway, dining table, or kitchen bench away from the oven.

3. Change the Water Every Two Days

Fresh water = longer-lasting flowers. Bacteria builds up quickly in vase water and blocks the stems from drinking. Every two days, tip out the old water, give the vase a quick rinse, refill with cool (not cold) water, and re-trim the stems while you're at it.

4. Winter Blooms Worth Knowing

Some of our favourite flowers to work with in winter at Poppy In April:

  • Ranunculus — delicate, layered petals in soft pinks and creams. A winter staple from NZ growers.
  • Orchids — elegant and long-lasting, perfect for gifting. Our orchid arrangements can last 4–6 weeks with minimal care.
  • Tulips — they keep growing after cutting, so leave a little extra room in the vase. They'll lean toward the light, which gives them a lovely natural look.
  • Seasonal foliage — we love adding native NZ greenery to winter arrangements for texture and longevity. Yellow flowering wattle is my fave!

5. Gifting Flowers in Winter? Here's What to Know

Winter is one of the best times to send flowers in Auckland , the cooler weather means they travel better and arrive in beautiful condition.

If you're sending a gift box or bouquet for a birthday, anniversary, or just because, a few tips:

  • Order ahead — our most popular arrangements sell out, especially around long weekends.
  • Add a gift card — a handwritten message makes all the difference. We include a card with every order.
  • Consider an orchid plant - if the recipient travels or is often out, they're forgiving and stunning.

A Note from Tessa

I started Poppy In April because I believe everyone deserves access to genuinely fresh, seasonal flowers, not the imported, week-old stems you find in supermarkets. Every arrangement we make is crafted with flowers sourced from local growers, which means what you receive reflects what's actually in season right now.

Winter is quieter, but it's one of my favourite times to work with flowers. The colours are softer, the stems are stronger, and there's something really special about a warm home filled with fresh blooms on a grey Auckland day.

If you have questions about caring for your flowers or want help choosing the right arrangement, feel free to reach out, I'd love to help.
