The Story Behind Poppy In April: Local Flowers, Local Love
by Tessa Judd
Why "Poppy In April"?
The name is personal, deeply so. My first daughter is named Poppy, and she was born in April. She's the reason I finally made the leap to go out on my own.
Becoming a mother has a way of clarifying things. It made me braver, more certain of what I wanted to build, and more determined to create something I'd be proud for her to grow up knowing. Poppy In April is named for her, and everything it stands for is something I hope she'll one day be proud of too.
The name also captures something I love about working with seasonal flowers: the anticipation. Poppies are fleeting , here short time, then gone! You can't manufacture that. You can't import it. You just have to be ready for it, and make the most of it while it lasts. That's the philosophy behind everything we do.
15+ Years in the Making
I've been working with flowers for over 15 years. I've done weddings, events, corporate installs, and everything in between. But what I kept coming back to , what I loved most, was the simple act of making something beautiful for someone's home, or for a person they cared about.
Poppy In April grew out of that. It's not a big operation. It's intentionally small, intentionally local, and intentionally seasonal. Every arrangement is made by hand, with flowers sourced from New Zealand growers who care as much about quality as I do.
What "Local" Actually Means
When I say local, I mean it. We source our flowers from New Zealand growers , not a wholesale warehouse full of stems flown in from Ecuador or Kenya. That means what you receive is genuinely fresh, genuinely seasonal, and genuinely connected to the land here.
It also means the selection changes. We don't always have the same flowers available week to week, because nature doesn't work that way. But that's the point, when you order from Poppy In April, you're getting what's actually beautiful right now, not what's been engineered to look the same year-round.
Auckland, Through and Through
We deliver across Auckland, and this city is very much part of who we are. Auckland's climate is generous, we get a longer growing season than most of the country, and that means more variety, more colour, and more opportunity to work with incredible local blooms.
We love delivering to homes in Grey Lynn, Ponsonby, Remuera, and everywhere in between. Whether it's a birthday bouquet to Takapuna or a sympathy arrangement to Howick, every delivery gets the same care and attention.
What We Believe
- Freshness over convenience. We'd rather tell you something isn't available than send you something past its best.
- Seasonal over standard. The flowers we use reflect what's actually growing, not what's easiest to source.
- Personal over corporate. Every order is made by hand. There's no production line here.
- Local over imported. New Zealand growers, New Zealand flowers, New Zealand delivery.
A Note on Gifting
One of the things I'm most proud of is how many people trust us with their most important moments, birthdays, anniversaries, new babies, bereavements. Flowers carry a lot of meaning, and we take that seriously.
If you're ever unsure what to send, reach out. I genuinely love helping people find the right thing for the right moment. That's not a marketing line , it's just true.
